Reasons Why You Should be active in Sports, Extracurriculars at The University

Sports and extracurricular activities have proven to keep students fit and build friendships. It is said that sports and health are closely connected. The positive impact of sports exercises on the bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons makes them strong and healthy. It also helps burn calories in the body, reducing the chances of obesity. Further cardiovascular muscles performance and endurance improve, increasing its efficiency and reducing the risk of heart diseases. Exercise triggers the use of sugar in the blood. Glucose is converted into energy hence balancing the blood sugars. Sports also help in the fight against cancer and other lifestyle diseases.

Some of the reasons why the students should be engaging in sports and extracurriculars while at the University are:-

Discipline

Every sport requires some mental, physical and tactical discipline. Adhering to rules, obeying the coach, practising restraint, etc., are all forms of discipline students learn through sports. Discipline enables them to reach their full potential and realize their goals – a trait seen in all successful people; thus, building leadership traits

Social skills

Playing sports amongst cross-function faculty students helps interact and build social skills with the older and younger players. They also develop a sense of belonging and get an opportunity to make new friends. These communication and social skills help them in their future relationships and careers.

Patience

Practice plays a significant role in improving performance in any sport or activity. Practice makes you perfect. Athletics teach students to keep practising and be patient to see the results.

Perseverance

Just like patience and practice, sports also need perseverance and dedication. Of course, there are highs and lows during practice sessions and matches. However, it helps students learn to power through and persevere even during the bad times, thus becoming more resilient. Practising perseverance at a young age gives them better coping skills and critical thinking skills to face more immense adversities in the future.

Accept defeat

In sports, just like in life, one cannot win all the time. Playing a sport teaches this truth early on in life how to accept defeat and lose graciously. They learn not to get disheartened and get back up and try again. It also teaches them about healthy competition.

Teamwork

Students learn that the team cannot win unless they all work together and play to their strengths. They also learn to become less selfish and not let ego get their best. Working together is an essential trait in today’s life and learning how to do so early on helps them become better team players in professional life.

Leadership Skills

Becoming captain or aspiring to become one naturally teaches students how to become good leaders – how to talk to other teammates, manage team emotions, take one for the team, etc. They also put these skills outside the pitch or court, making them good leaders that others want to follow.

It is also a way to bring exceptional sports talents to the forefront and nurture their talent. Mahindra University has won several badminton, basketball, football, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball match awards. It helps the students in team building, helps build comradeship and relieves their stress after a tiring day. Mahindra University has also actively motivated students to participate in various sports and games.
