Dr. Sandeepan Roy holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (with specialization in Transportation Systems Engineering) from IIT Bombay, awarded in 2021. Prior to that he completed his M.Tech. from IIT Kharagpur in 2015 and obtained his B.Tech. from IIT (BHU) Varanasi in 2013. Following the completion of his Ph.D., he worked as a senior project engineer in an industry-sponsored project, and subsequently served as a post-doctoral fellow at the esteemed Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay.
Dr. Roy possesses a diverse skill set in various areas of transportation systems, including modeling, optimization, computing, geospatial data and network analysis, and programming in Python and MATLAB. His significant contributions to the field are reflected in eighteen published technical papers across peer-reviewed journals, books, and conference proceedings. His research interests encompass a wide range of topics such as transportation systems modeling, GIS applications and optimization in transportation infrastructure modeling and development, high-speed rail infrastructure planning, metaheuristics in alignment development and facility location, computer-aided geometric design, and feasibility analysis of transportation projects.
Dr. Roy has presented his work across several international and national conferences such as the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting (TRB-2018, 2019 & 2020), World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR-2019), ADBI Conference on Spillover Effects of High-Speed Rail and Quality of Life (2018), ADBI-Chubu University Virtual Conference on Transport Infrastructure Development, Spillover Effects, and Quality of Life (2020), Conference of Transportation Research Group of India (CTRG-2015 & 2017), International Conference on Transportation Planning and Implementation Methodologies for Developing Countries (TPMDC-2022) and International Conference on Transportation Systems Engineering and Management (CTSEM-2021). Additionally, Dr. Roy was actively involved in the organization of several internationally reputed conferences, such as the 15th World Conference on Transportation Research (WCTR-2019), 4th Conference of Transportation Research Group of India (CTRG-2017), and 12th International Conference on Transportation Planning and Implementation Methodologies for Developing Countries (TPMDC-2016).
Beyond academia, Dr. Roy leads an active lifestyle, engaging in a diverse range of interests that reflect his commitment to personal growth and holistic development. An advocate of both physical and creative expression, Dr. Roy has a dedicated fitness routine with a keen participation in performing arts, particularly dance. He enjoys listening to podcasts from influential figures like Joe Rogan, Andrew Huberman, and Jordan Peterson, and music (some of his favorite musicians include Arijit Singh, Lucky Ali, Shaan, Michael Jackson, Eminem, Pink Floyd, AP Dhillon, King, and Divine). Dr. Roy enjoys works of artists such as Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Quintin Tarantino, Nana Patekar, Cilian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, and the late Irrfan Khan. A dedicated sports enthusiast, he enjoys mixed martial arts, tennis, Formula 1, and football, with his favorite sportspersons being Sachin Tendulkar, Roger Federer, and Lionel Messi.
Dr. Roy actively supports co-curricular activities and believes that having such interests helps in the overall development of a person by providing a creative outlet and helping in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This in turn translates into a productive and a successful professional with qualities such as dedication, leadership, team building, resourcefulness, and taking initiative. This thought process is grounded in his own extensive participation in co-curricular activities throughout his academic journey, where he consistently brought honor to his institutes. Some of the notable achievements would be as follows:
- Represented IIT Bombay and secured 1st position in street dance battle event for two consecutive years at the 3rd and 4th Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Roorkee (December 2018) and IIT Bombay (December 2019), respectively.
- Represented IIT Bombay and secured 1st position in group dance event for two consecutive years at the 1st and 2nd Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Bombay (December 2016) and IIT Kanpur (December 2017), respectively.
- Represented IIT Bombay and secured 2nd position in group dance event at the 3rd and 5th Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Roorkee (December 2018) and IIT Madras (January 2023)
- Represented IIT Bombay and secured 2nd position in street dance battle event at the 2nd Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Kanpur (December 2017)
- Contingent member of the overall championship team (IIT Bombay) at the 1st and 3rd Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Bombay (December 2016) and IIT Roorkee (December 2018), respectively
- Contingent member of the overall runners-up team (IIT Bombay) at the 2nd, 4th and 5th Inter IIT Cultural Meet held at IIT Kanpur (December 2017), IIT Bombay (December 2019), IIT Madras (January 2023), respectively
- Represented IIT Bombay twice at the Kalaghoda Arts Festival, Mumbai (February 2017, 2018)
- Represented IIT Kharagpur at Spring Fest 2015 (Annual Cultural Fest of IIT Kharagpur) and secured 1st position in street dance battle event and 2nd position in group dance event.
- Represented IIT Kharagpur at Alcheringa 2014 (Annual Cultural Fest of IIT Guwahati) and secured 1st position in group dance event.

Dr. Roy’s research interests span key aspects of transportation systems, optimization, and innovation. He focuses on modeling transportation systems, for better efficiency and cost effectiveness. Leveraging optimization techniques, he is into developing strategies that streamline transportation networks, optimizing routes and resource utilization. Dr. Roy seamlessly integrates spatial data with transportation planning, fostering smarter decision-making using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Another area of interest is high-speed railways infrastructure development. Dr. Roy is interested in developing novel approaches to alignment development and facility location employing metaheuristics. These methodologies exceed traditional constraints, unlocking novel solutions in alignment design and facility placement. Dr. Roy is also exploring various aspects of urban mobility including multi-modal integration of various modes towards developing holistic transportation ecosystems. Apart from these topics he is also interested in the area of computer-aided geometric design of transportation facilities exploring new applications and innovations.
