M. Tech in Systems Engineering

Overview

“Systems Engineering is an engineering practice and compendium of the techniques that integrate and harmonize various aspects of a product life cycle”. Systems Engineering is practiced very rigorously for product development in many aerospace, automobile, chemical, electronics and other engineering industries for the last few decades. This discipline enables product development in a very systematic manner by concurrent interfacing of many sub-components leading to significant reduction in cost and time. It is a unique interdisciplinary program which considers everything in the nature and society as a system and enhances the exploratory skills in the innovative design of a system.

The M. Tech. program in Systems Engineering is offered to students who are interested in advanced learning and research in this field with a focus on inter-disciplinary integration of engineering, systems understanding and management, application to life cycle management. This involves learning system architecture, design, integration, implementation and sustaining it (i.e. manage, evolve and re-engineer), utilizing advanced methods of evolutionary computation, Operation Research (OR), Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), System reliability, energy management system, distribution management system, etc.

The full-time PG degree program is of 60+ credits, which is spread over 4 semesters. About two-thirds of the credits involve coursework, leaving the rest for project work. The emphasis on project would be on conducting original research and writing a dissertation with the results so obtained and also explore feasibility of a journal publication with the key results.

The program is flexible enough to allow a student to specialize in on any stream of interest by choosing and taking appropriate elective courses and working for successfully completing a dissertation in that area. The program is also intended to offer a design project spread over the first two semesters.

Eligibility

  • B.E./B.Tech. in any stream of engineering, or MSc in Mathematics or Physics with 1st division/ 60% marks.

  • Desirable: 1 to 2 years industry experience for those with MSc background.
